Driver scans are basically very simple scanning programs that can be downloaded from the Internet, and will check your registry files quickly and efficiently in order to identify what device drivers you have installed, and whether any of these or corrupted, obsolete or duplicated.  Errors in your driver files can lead to system wide problems such as poor performance and difficulty running applications and devices, so this is an important area of your computer to carry out regular maintenance on.

A good driver scan will be able to correct any problems, and can also provide up dates for any older drivers if you need them.  Remember if you are still using an old device you may not need the driver updating, so check before you accept any new updates otherwise you may have to reload the old driver again after you have finished the scan.  It is also a good idea to use a scanning program that has full back up and restore features.
